Falls Park stone-throwers driver danger warning

Police have warned young people who threw stones and bottles at passing cars in west Belfast that they could have caused serious injury.

Buses were diverted from the Falls Road for a time on Friday evening as objects were being thrown from the Falls Park.

Police said that between 21:00 and 22:00 GMT, they received reports of a number of youths drinking, burning bins and throwing objects towards traffic.

They were cleared from the area when officers attended, a spokesman said.

Inspector David McBride said it was "a very dangerous activity".

"If a bottle or stone were to hit a passing vehicle it could shatter the windscreen, injure the driver or cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle," he said.

"You might think that it is just fooling around but it can result in a serious incident or a criminal record which can affect travel, education and employment opportunities in the future.

"I would also ask parents to be aware of where their children are and what they are doing when they are not at home."
