実はこの監督の次の作品を観て、ゴモラを観てみたくなりました。両作品ともカンヌでグランプリを受賞。ゴモラの方が社会的にも曰く付きの作品ですが、個人的には次の作品の方が面白かったです。

不勉強な私は「カモッラ」というイタリア暗黒組織に関しては何の知識もなく、この映画も「久々に面白そうなイタリア映画が来たな」程度で
前知識も無く手に取ったのですが、その内容・表現手法ともに衝撃の作品でした。

同じくイタリアの犯罪組織を描いた『ゴッドファーザー』や『シシリアン』とは目線を異にし、組織末端の構成員数名を中心に群像劇として
物語は展開します。
とはいえ、犯罪組織に属する人たちをヒロイックに祭り上げるタイプの娯楽映画ではありません（活劇としてはその手の映画は大好物なのですが・・）。それどころか観客が感情移入しやすいイケイケなキャラクターほど何とも苦い結末を舐めさせられます。

手持ちカメラを活かしたリアルで冷徹な表現手法を用いて、恫喝と暴力をもって人々を支配するという組織像を徹底的に作りこんでいます。
劇中でのバイオレンス描写は事件現場を目撃させられているかのような生々しさに満ち、人々が組織の手にかかる場面はまるでホラー・サスペンスを
見ているかのような緊迫感すら感じます。

それが単なるコケおどしに終わらないのは、その冷徹な組織と彼らの悪事の数々が、「健全」なはずの一般社会の抱える矛盾や病巣と深く
結びついているという現実を私たち観客に突きつけてくるという力強さにあります。
特にラストに明かされる衝撃の事実を目にし、私は打ちのめされる思いでした。
まさか「あの場所」の「それ」を作るための資金が、この犯罪組織から流れているなどとは・・・・・・。

社会派映画としても重量級の傑作ですし、犯罪映画や暴力映画などがお好きな方にも、とても見ごたえのある傑作だと感じました。

ネタバレなしで感想を書きます。結論から言うと惜しい感じです。ラストが締まらない点が。その他「抗争」の有り様が今ひとつ上手く描けていない以外は上出来だと思います。全編ロケっぽい撮影法や色彩をしている点、ロケ地の有り様、らしい俳優でリアルに描けている点、一場面の尺の適正さとしつこ過ぎない描写でスピード感を維持してる点、集団演出物ながら大団円を設定しない構成等が。

イタリア人になった気分で映画を見ました。
完璧に理解できたわけではありませんが、原作も読んでいたし、NHKのラジオイタリア語講座でこの作品を使っての放送もあったので
それなりに理解できました。
日本語字幕がない分勉強にもなりました。

いい映画だった。俺もフランチェスコ・ロージ、ダミアーノ・ダミアーニらイタリアの巨匠の映画は観ている。
貶す人もいるようだが、その後継者として恥ずかしくない映画だ。
そう、この映画のメインはチンピラである。だから意味がある。
彼らは俺たちと実は全く変わらない。世界の狂気の深さに無知であるという点に関してだ。
俺は頂上を目指すとか、世界を変えるなどとほざき、それが自分の手で出来るという事を信じでいる。
彼らは、彼女たちは自分が何者かも知らない。自分たちの上にいる人間が、しかも直属の誰かすらも分からない。
将棋の駒のくせに、自分が差し手になれると考える愚か者。銃を片手に「トニー・モンタナのようになってやる」
等というが、「スカーフェイス」のトニー・モンタナはカッコいいだけではない、権力とは何かくらいは理解していた
権力者を殺すどころか、利用されても利用されていることすら理解できない。

唯一、まともと言えるのはトニー・セルヴィッロ（「湖のほとりで」の芝居も素晴らしかった。ここでも貫録十分）
演じるやくざのボスの一人。彼に付き添って来た若者が去る時に言い放つ言葉が素晴らしい。世界はとっくに狂っているのだ。
何をいまさら正義だの人の道などいうのか。そんなものはとっくに死んでいる。動いてゆくカネ、モノ、それは世界にすら
繋がっている。人間の幸せなど他人の不幸の元にしか成立しないではないか。世界に正気を取り戻させることなどそれこそ
狂気だ。この最後に善意を見せる若者も上に挙げたチンピラと大差ない。権力とは何か、何者がそれを有しているのか。
それも理解していない。若い世代は敏感なようで鈍感だ。自分たちの相手が暗殺など出来ないくらいのものだという事を。

その挙句に待っているのはまさに「老人が始め、若者が死に、誰も勝利しない」世界の拡大である。
情け容赦なく殺されてゆくチンピラ。監督のガローネの彼ら、彼女らを観る目は温かいようで実はおそろしく冷たい。
自分も世界も理解できないようなワカモンに世界を変える力はあるか？彼らにはそもそも盾を突く資格すら乏しいではないか。
そう言ったこの世界の闇を明確に、骨太に、冷徹に描いている。誰もが好きな映画とは言えまい。しかしそれを割り引いてでも
観る価値は十二分に合う、素晴らしい映画である。

特にストーリーらしいものがあるわけではなくいくつかのエピソードが交互に語られます。
共通するのはイタリアに根深く息づくマフィアの存在です。
麻薬などの非合法活動以外にも産業や製造業にまで及んでいます。
元は内部告発のような暴露本みたいですね。
もっと映画向きにしたほうがいいような気もします。
「スカーフェイス」に憧れるふたりの若者の話がよかったです。
あとは産業廃棄物処理業者や裁縫業界やマフィア関係者に金を運ぶ男の話などです。

『ゴッドファザー』で有名な、シチリアのコーザー・ノストラと並ぶ、
ナポリを拠点にして活動するイタリア４大マフィア『カモッラ』の実体を、
ドキュメンタリータッチで描いた作品。
マフィアの抗争を通して、組織としてのファミリーと、ドンと実の子供達の絆や
家族愛を重ね合わせて見せた人間ドラマ『ゴッドファザー』と違って、
本作は、売春、恐喝、詐欺、麻薬取引は勿論のこと、偽ブランド品販売、
武器の横流し、果ては環境問題に関わる有害物質を含む産業廃棄物の
不法投棄などで得た汚れた金を組織の資金源としている闇企業『カモッラ』そのものを
描いて、企業や政治家と癒着して裏社会を牛耳り、邪魔するものは情け容赦なく
殺戮していく暴力集団としての許しがたい現実を、日常を切り取っていく生々しい手法で、
映像化されています。

ネオレアリズモに根ざしたイタリア映画が得意とする冷めた視点は、
本作でも遺憾なく発揮されていて、同じ日に観た『反右派闘争』の犠牲になった中国の
人々を感傷的に描いた『無言歌』で、初めて劇映画を撮ったドキュメンタリー畑出身の
ワン・ビン監督に参考にしてもらいたい作品でした。

「ゴッドファーザー」×「シティ・オブ・ゴッド」のうたい文句に惹かれてみたけど、どっちの足元にも及ばないつまらん映画でした。
ドライな描写でも現実の厳しさや感情移入が出来る表現はいろいろあると思うけど、この映画からは何も伝わってこない。ただ淡々とひたすら社会の下層のチンピラの日常を描いているだけ。現実がこれなんだろうけど、タイトルに書いたように「観た後にもっと詳しく知りたい！という欲求が一切起こらない」時点で映画として人に何かを伝えたくて作っているなら全くの駄作。

The Italian movie "Gomorrah" is riveting and stunning. It is filmed in a documentary style and after a few minutes you feel like you are watching real life events. The subject matter is dark and disturbing - this is not a movie for the weak at heart. Also, it has a structure much like Robert Altman's "Short Cuts". In other words, there are about five short stories taking place throughout the film and some interconnect more than others.

The subject matter is The Camorra, which is described in Wikipedia as:
"The Camorra is a mafia-like criminal organization, or secret society, originating in the region of Campania and its capital Naples in Italy. It finances itself through drug trafficking/distribution, human smuggling, prostitution, toxic waste disposal, construction, loan sharking, gambling, arms smuggling, extortion, protection and racketeering and its activities have led to high levels of murder in the areas in which it operates. It is the oldest and largest criminal organization in Italy."

This is the dark underbelly of Italy that you have not seen. This is not the romantic Italian world of food and wines, the museums, art, culture, or music.... - prepare yourself for a view of the Italian criminal underworld and how it is connected to all facets of life in Italy and around the globe. This is an eye-opening movie that does not glamorize the subject matter.

Filmed on location in Naples, Italy at significant risk to the film crew - as the Camorra went about their daily business in the surrounding streets of the city. The Blu Ray transfer by Criterion is first-rate quality and the additional features are educational and informative on this edition. The Criterion edition of "Gomorrah" is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

This movie is a shocking experience for a lover of the beautiful, romantic and classically tasteful Italy - which of course is a tourists naive perception of Europe's former fascist but always charming bad boy - bella Italia. Italy is also dirty, violent and full of fear and oppression, orchestrated by incompetent politicians and intellectuals scared and running (as the author of the novel that the script is based on). The working class has given up on job prospects and deal in dope and death. Blocks of apartments function as fortresses for the underclass mob soldiers. Two young kids are our fix points and we follow an actual hand full of main characters in a web of stories - a style developed by the late master director, Robert Altman. In 'Gomorrah' we learn that from the bottom to the top, Napoli/Italy/Europe seems entangled in crime, drugs and corruption. An early, ugly death is always right around the corner - illegal guns (for hire) are everywhere. As is toxic waste, worth it's price in gold if you can get it 'disposed of' - and no problem, the mafia will do the job, complete with child labor, illegal immigrants and smooth talk, with a threat lurking right underneath the surface. Master acting takes place here, some of the best actors around do great work in this movie! Young and old. Another story shows beauty unfold in the haute couture and T-shirt section of this old, industrial city Naples in decay and simultaneous transformation, yet still ruled by almost prehistoric brutality and cynicism. One of Italy's core industries, clothes production, is being taken over by Chinese immigrant factories - here we see the consequences... from the innocent boy and the sublime but exploited tailor to the lowest, psychopathic killer - the 'Camorra' - Napoli's deep rooted mafia dynasty/network of families - control everything!
Fantastic interview disc is extremely informative and adds tremendously to this package. Totally worth the time and money (the movie is not for the kids and it's loooong, yet not a minute too long, so set aside a whole evening, send the children to bed early - and then enjoy). This film's images and themes keep popping up in the mind, weeks after you watch it - it's really grabs you and won't let go... so I do not hesitate recommending it highly. A true masterpiece!

I think some people approached this film expecting some Hollywood romanticize view of the Mafia, I know I did. True, it has a start that wrong foots you. Almost traditional and quite bloody Mafia film for the first five minutes, but, this gives way very quickly to a more slow paced film with very little violence (though strong occasional violence is there), and this is where it wrong foots you.

As I watched I realized it was not about the Mafia itself, but about a small area of Italy. Specifically what looked like their equivalent to a council flat complex. It unfolded with six people being followed via five threads, not necessarily linked to one another but glued together by the area they lived in, more specifically how the Mafia's influence touches everybody's life, either directly or indirectly in the area.

The five threads:

The 'hot heads', most easy to follow and understand, couple of lads influenced by the romanticize work of Hollywood films such as 'raging bull', wanted to go it alone but were dealing with ruthless people way out of their league, one more against his will than the other.

The 'boy' - this is an example of how young people get (and want to get) into the Mafia life style but also those associated with him paid the price.

The 'mud man' - this one was actual Mafia, in the extras it is told the he was given the task of disposing of waste mud that was toxic, what he in fact did was sell it to a company that recycled it for fertilizer. Hence he was paid twice and hence the statistics before the end credits

The 'Taylor', this was the most vague, but his work had connections with one branch of the Mafia, he was also working for a Chinese company run by the rival Chinese Mafia. Some hints that even the rich and famous of the world could be wearing items that had Mafia influence.

The 'money runner', pretty obvious, working for the Mafia, he was the person who paid out what the Mafia said people should get, hated the job and wanted out, but they wouldn't let him, they controlled his life. Also in the extras, it speaks of how the Mafia set the 'rates of pay' to these people, which causes anger.

Not a film if you want the more romanticized ('theatrical' as someone put it to me) style of Hollywood, but more 'documentary' style has people say.

One thing this film does have is a sense of suppression, paranoia, repression, fear and being trap into a lifestyle it is very difficult to escape through out the entire film.

Well worth buying and watching again. I was told to watch the interview with the writer first as this gives information about the general area and back story to the events (all based on real life events), this definitely does help

The blu ray picture and sound is fine with 'over two hours of extras'
