First it was full-size pickups, now it's full-size sport-utilities—Nissan seems to be entering a new segment every month. Unveiled here in New York, the full-size Pathfinder Armada, which is based on the full-size Titan pickup, slots above the midsize Pathfinder and by no means displaces Nissan's most popular SUV. In fact, Nissan made it clear that Armada is "in addition to" and not "in place of" the Pathfinder. Which is good, because the Armada is a big step up from the Pathfinder—Nissan says the Armada is for the "full-size family adventure segment." With three rows of seats that can accommodate up to eight passengers, the Armada is poised for adventure and features a 5.6-liter 32-valve 300-plus-horsepower V-8 engine mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. The Armada is capable of towing 9100 pounds, be it boat, race car, horse trailer, or 91 100-pound sandbags. For improved ride and handling, as well as more interior room—there's more second-row legroom than in any competitor—the Armada comes with a four-wheel independent unequal-length control-arm suspension. When it goes on sale this fall, the Armada will be offered in six versions, including an off-road model, and will come equipped with side curtain airbags and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC).
