2019 Jaguar XJ

Overview

As the only Brit in a segment ruled by Germans, the Jaguar XJ has a lot on its shoulders—a weight it bears remarkably well. A new generation of XJ is in the works and Jaguar has confirmed that it will be an all-electric luxury sedan, debuting sometime before the end of 2019. (We review the racy XJR575 separately.)

Engines, Ride, and Handling

A 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 with 340 horsepower comes standard; a 470-hp supercharged V-8 is also available. At our test track an all-wheel-drive model with the V-6 ran to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds; we haven't tested the supercharged V-8 since 2011, but back then it managed a 4.4-second zero-to-60-mph time. Steering is sharp—perhaps a little too sharp for buyers of large luxury sedans—which gives the XJ a decidedly sporty driving demeanor. Its firm suspension and surprising agility make it feel more like a sports sedan than a luxury limo.

Interior and Technology

The interior is appropriately swanky for the XJ's place at the top of the Jaguar lineup, with quality materials and luxe styling. Both standard and long-wheelbase models are offered, the latter of which offers a far more capacious rear seat. We still have some issues with build quality and the bug-ridden infotainment system, but even so, the XJ is a lovely ride. All XJs come standard with a panoramic sunroof, heated and cooled front and rear seats, a 20-speaker Meridian audio system (a 26-speaker system is optional), and touchscreen infotainment with navigation. A host of driver-assistance features—including automated emergency braking and lane-keeping assist—are also standard, but Jaguar makes buyers pay extra for adaptive cruise control and a self-parking feature.
