高校時代に「パラダイス・シアター」「ミスター・ロボット」がヒットし聴いてましたが、今回（40年ぶりに）他のアルバムを聴いてみようと思い購入しました。ベスト盤は（曲は良いのですが）あまり面白くなく、このバンドの本領はやはりオリジナルアルバムなんだと再認識しました。曲のドラマチックな展開もさることながら、個性的なリードボーカルが3人いることでアルバム全体がバラエティー豊かな作品に仕上がっているのだと思います※ツイン・リード・ギターも格好いい！

スティックスに関しては説明の必要ありませんね。5枚組ボックスセット。アナログ盤或いはテープでしかアルバムを持っていなかった私にとって、とても経済的に優しいCDセット。録音状態に関しては、アルバムにより音量レベルがやや低い気がしますが、特に問題はありません。
ファンの方はジャケットを見れば、内容は判ると思いますが念の為。

2. Pieces of Eight (6位)
3. Paradise Theatre (1位)
4. Kilroy Was Here (3位)
5. The Best of Styx
何れも1977～1983年に発表された彼ら全盛期の作品です（カッコ内はネット情報による全米チャート）。多くの方がご指摘されているように、何故が1979年の「Corner Stone」（2位）が含まれていないのは残念。ベストにはボックスに含まれていないアルバム（「Equinox」、「Crystal Ball」、「Corner Stone」、「Edge of the Century」）からの作品も入っていますが、何れにしても全11曲では中途半端と言わざるを得ず、やはり代わりに「Corner Stone」を入れてほしかったです（大人の事情なのでしょうが）。

1枚1枚のアルバムを聴くと、珠玉の作品群が一層際立ちます。彼らの歌声、メロディは何故かリスナーの感情に直接訴えてきます。琴線に触れるというか、感情が抑えられなくなります。う～ん、表現が難しい。恐らく私の言わんとしている事をお判りになる方は沢山いらっしゃると思います。

今、CD聴きながらレビュー書いています。「Come Sail Away」,「Babe」,「The Best of time」～。歳なのかなぁ、思わず目頭が。。。

これにCrystal Ballを買えば、トミー・ショー加入後の絶頂期をお安くコンプリートできます。まだ当時のレコードを聴いているのでびっくりしました。特に日本においてはコーナーストーンのベイブまでヒットがなかったので、コーナーストーンより前を知らないファンにもオススメです。

ボックスケースもかなりしっかりしており、内容もSTYXの黄金期の5枚となかなか良いのですが、リマスターされていないようでボリュームをかなりあげなければならないレベルでした。

この5枚です。

TuneInでアメリカのクラシック・ロック・ラジオの放送を聴いていたところ、Miss Americaが流れて、何じゃこの曲は！と衝撃を受けたため、アルバムを聴いてみようと思い購入しました。

というわけで購入目的は、グランド・イリュージョンだったわけですが... ピーシズ・オブ・エイトの完成度はすごいですね！びっくりしました。プログレっぽいような、でもポップな要素もあるような、絶妙なバランスだと思います。

音が小さいのでマイナス1。

This has 5 classic albums of Styx from the A&M years. I wish it had been released like the box set for the vinyl collection and include Equinox, Crystal Ball and Edge of the Century. I think if it had Equinox and Crystal Ball it would have satisfied more customers. Other than that I am overall happy with the sound. I won't even begin to compare it with the original vinyl releases back in the 1970's and 1980's. I prefer the vinyl when it comes to the A&M label.
Inside the box we have "The Grand Illusion" which is their major breakthrough with the release of their top charting hit, "Come Sail Away" back in the fall of 1977. This album is very solid and ranks as my favorite Styx album.

Next in the box is, "Pieces of Eight" containing "Blue Colar Man", "Renegade" and "Sing for the Day". This ranks as my second favorite in this box. My favorite track on this album is "Queen of Spades", it starts out slow and really rocks on the second half of the song.

"Cornerstone", their 1979 release, was a turning point for the band. For those of us that liked that solid progressive rock sound, this album was a disapointment. It lacked the energy found on the previous projects. "Babe" was just not the kind of song serious rock fans were expecting. "Why Me?" stuck out like a misfit song and "Boat on a River", even though it was very well done, didn't seem like it sounded like a Styx song. Then there was "Borrowed Time" which sounded like it was going to be a good solid sounding song, ends up having this crazy section in the middle that goes, "Yes"....."No" and "No"....."Yes". It has another melow love ballad, "First Time", a song James Young sings called, "Eddie" which fades out and fades back in with backward tracks like the Beatles "Helter Skelter", then ends with Tommy Shaw singing, "Love In the Midnight".

"Paradise Theatre" was a bit better and more palitable than "Cornerstone", but still would not be considered a serious rock album. It has "The Best of Times", "Too Much Time on My Hands" and "Rockin' the Paradise". "Snowblind" is a favorite that got played on album rock stations.

"Kilroy Was Here" was the album that ruined it for me. I avoided purchase of this album when it first came out. I am hearing it for the first time in this box. I have to say after listening to it all the way through, I like many of the songs, so I can't say it is a total waste.

The extra artwork with gatefold covers, inner sleaves and posters don't come with this package. I missed the poster that came with "The Grand Illusion". Maybe with later releases these items can be added on more deluxe editions. Be sure to get the early Wooden Nickle years, "Equinox", "Crystal Ball" and "Edge of The Century" for a more complete library and if you are really into a complete catalog get the later reunion projects of which I never cared to get.

If you want to have all the classical Styx albums and save cash then this is the way to go. The 5 CDs come in cardboard vinyl replicas and look great. There's no need to discuss the virtues of these classical albums, Styx fans will know them inside out. I believe they're all good to great in this Set.
The Box Set is pretty bare bone: as there's no booklet included, all you get are the 5 CDs, but that's good enough for me.
