Iron and steel 'in Teesside's character'

Iron and steelmaking at SSI's plant in the north-east of England is to be mothballed, with the loss of 1,700 jobs.

SSI chief operating officer Cornelius Louwrens, said it was "an extremely sad day". The company is blaming the continuing background of poor steel trading conditions across the globe, and the severe deterioration in world steel prices.
