Vinyl LP pressing. Fading Frontier is the new studio album by Deerhunter, the record was made by founding members Bradford Cox, Lockett Pundt, Moses Archuleta, and bassist Josh McKay. Written in their hometown of Atlanta, GA, production duties were shared by the band and Ben H. Allen III, continuing a collaboration that began with 2010's Halcyon Digest. Following the death-rattle garage catharsis of Monomania, the group have shifted towards something strikingly balanced, focused on melody and texture. The songs are brighter; if not in content, then in the album's production. Starkness plays against clutter in what is the band's most complex yet accessible work to date. Fading Frontier shows that a decade in, Deerhunter has lost none of it's intensity. As the group matures, so they have grown into the most consistent purveyors of art-rock of their generation.

Apple Music

Each of Deerhunter's outings is radically different. This is NOT a follow-up to Monomania (an album that is truly dear to me, as it's unwieldiness, chaos and anger were relatable to me at that time (even now to a certain extent), this isn't a shoegazy throwback to Micro or the refined Halcyon, nor a psychedelic trip like era or crypto. I guess the best way to describe this album is Deerhunter's take on oldschool delta blues (even that's a stretch, it's unique and can't be categorized).
Bradford Cox is quite the individual, who's learned to channel his unique experience on this planet into such a wonderful body of music. I feel like he is a genuine and kind hearted person, but at the same time has an edge, a perspective and a bluntness that contributes to a disconnected/untouchable persona because of many hardships he's had to endure. I read somewhere that his musical output has slowed down over the past few years simply due to his lifestyle and maturing and not as many exciting things going on. I'm in the same age group and can definitely relate to entering this phase of life. With that said, even though the album may be softer/brighter, it's never boring.
The guitar tones are clean and crisp with some fantastic (pleasant) melodies . The rhythm sections have always been tight (and this continues on this album, although the bass line on Breaker feels like its lifted from an old Michael Jackson song). Though the lyrics can be dark, they're comforting and have a sense of hope... like submitting to what is, after battling on end with what your ego thinks it wants. The synths sprinkled throughout are also great, and can be subtle like the breakdown in Living my Life or front and center like in Duplex Planet.
The three biggest highlights on the album for me are:
1) Take Care: I know it feels like a microcastle song and its probably nostalgia that is kicking in, but the culmination of the woodwinds, piano, lyrics, outro, freak out effects, is mind blowing. Its like being on the verge of an awesome wave, almost falling into the abyss.
2) Rattlesnake: This is the centerpiece of the album. It just makes you want to get down and boogie. It has a driving beat, and the verses and chorus are spectacular. It almost sounds like a chirpy, radio-friendly version of it never stops.
3) Ad Astra: Yes, the frontman of this outfit is amazing. But in all honesty, I prefer Deerhunter over Atlas Sound any day, and Deerhunter can only be Deerhunter as a band with key contributions from every member. It's easy to see Archuleta and McKay's genius in the music because its the rhythm section. But I highly regard Pundt as well. I feel like he's the softspoken mastermind in the back who knows how to subtly shape a song, to take it from good to great. I may be mistaken, just because he's the lead singer on Ad Astra doesn't necessarily mean it's one of his babies, but it's still a highlight for me (I always look forward to his songs on the albums: Fountain Stairs, Coronado, the Missing were great).
Finally I have to mention the controversial "Leather and Wood". I don't know if it does belong on this album. It's great, if you're in the mood for it, but easily one of the skippable tracks if you don't want to slow down/meander. It simply breaks the flow. It sounds too much like Atlas Sound (slower, heavy on the effects, the distinct vocal style, buzzes and beeps).
My one big gripe is that the album is too short (36 mins). After waiting almost 2.5 years, I really wanted a bigger serving. At least two more songs, a quick punchy song or even a psychedelic monster to round out the set.
With amazing releases this year like: I Love You Honey Bear, New Bermuda, Depression Cherry, Currents... Deerhunter still maintains to be the most unique, and my main go to band.
Can't wait to see them at Skully's in Columbus this month!
