Army bomb disposal officers have dealt with a pipe bomb during a security alert on the outskirts of Londonderry.

They carried out a controlled explosion on the device, which was found close to the border with Donegal.

A police spokeswoman said: "At this stage it is believed to be a viable, small pipe bomb-type device."

A number of items have been removed for further examination. The Braehead Road and the Letterkenny Road, which were closed for hours, have now reopened.

It is believed the alert followed reports of suspicious activity in the area.

It caused traffic disruption in the city on Friday afternoon, as heavy goods vehicles were diverted away from the area.
