全体的にブロンディのサウンドは安っぽいですが、そこがまあイケテるところでもあります。
只直ぐに飽きるんでしょうね。

前作アルバムの大ヒット後、若干のインターバル（メンバーのソロ活動等もあった）を挟んでリリースされた6th作。1982年作品。
アフロ・ビートやエスニック・テイストを大量に注入した、ある意味実験的な作風となっています。

ただし、全体の印象としては典型的な80年代ポップロックであり、決して取っつき難い作品ではありません。
方向性としては前々作『Eat to the Beat』に近いニューウェイヴ路線が取られているように思います。
様々なジャンルの要素を取り込みながらも、キャッチーで即効性の高いナンバーが多くなっていて、初聴時ですんなりと作品の世界観の中に入っていけると思います。

しかしながら、作品の完成度としては、これまでに比べかなり低調なものになってしまった感は拭えないというのは、正直あります。
ひとつひとつの楽曲それ自体については、さほど悪いとは思えないのですが、それがワンバッチのアルバムとして一括りになると、途端にパワーダウンを感じさせてしまうのです。

原因は、収録各曲の「鍛え上げ不足」にあるのではないかと自分は思っています。
世界的成功を受けてのハードスケジュール、その後に若干の休息はあったとはいえ、メンバーそれぞれにソロ活動を行っていたりして（特にデボラのソロ活動はアルバムリリースなんかもあり、相当にハードだったはず）、本作のレコーデイングに入るまでの準備期間というのは極めて短かったのでは、という事態が容易に想像できます。
そうした状況下ではしっかりとしたマテリアルが揃わず、レコード発売の契約期限などもあって、作品はかなりの急仕上げになったのではないかと思われます。

結果、従来の作品群に比べ、「やっつけ」な部分がはっきり露呈する作風となってしまい、商業的にも明らかな失敗作になってしまったのです。

何より、グループのキーパーソンでありカリスマであるデボラのパフォーマンスに、これまでのような覇気が殆ど感じられないのが痛い。
全体的に淡々とした歌唱になっていて、これまでのセクシーさやパッションが決定的に不足しています。
疲労の色が如実に滲み出ている、そんな印象を受けざるを得ません。

・・・とにかく、熱量不足を感じさせられずにはいらない作品になってしまっています。残念ながら。
レコーディング期間をもっと長めに取って、楽曲を更にしっかり磨き上げればこんな作品にはならなかったとは思うのですが。・・・
結果、本作での失敗を受けて、バンドは一度目の解散という選択を余儀なくされてしまいます。

"The Hunter" by Blondie is one of those records that you will either love or loathe. As you can see from my rating, I love it. "The Hunter" was released in 1982 and Blondie was going through a rough time. There were a lot of arguments and drama brewing within the band. Producer Mike Chapman (please read the short essay written by him in the liner notes) knew this would be the last Blondie record he would ever produce. But even though band was coming apart at the seams emotionally, I still feel like the music on this record is solid and experimental, more so than any other Blondie album. The opening track is evident of that impeccable creativity, "Orchid Club" which is a heart-pounding, foot-stomping powerhouse! The song opens with the sound of screaming monkeys, then the synth kicks in, and finally the killer drums. "Orchid Club" is my pick for the BEST song on "The Hunter". Debbie Harry's vocals and songwriting were at its finest during this time period. Debbie co-wrote some amazing songs here with Nigel Harrison and her then-boyfriend Chris Stein. The first single (and also the only single released from this record) "Island of Lost Souls" is a calypso-flavored gem. I like the horn section, and the contrast between the music and lyrics. The music is sunny and breezy whereas the lyrics are somber and full of regret: "Where did he go?/I'm tired of waiting here for him/where can he be?/he's not with me..." "Dragonfly" is another one of those experimental juggernauts. Debbie does a play-by-play commentary about a futuristic space ship. The song is brilliant and very tongue-in-cheek. "For Your Eyes Only" was supposed to be the theme song to a James Bond flick of the same name. Not sure why the producers didn't want to use it, but I think the song is brooding and fitting. Oh well, their loss. In "The Beast" Debbie sings about the perks of being a celebrity. And whom is the "beast"? Well, Debbie of course. Debbie's lyrics on "The Beast" are so snarky and biting, I love that side of her songwriting: "For the first time in my life, the bouncers would greet me/the doormen would escort me/managers adored me..." "War Child" is another highlight, (the music is stellar) and this album also contains an extended version of this song. I also wanted to point out that "The Hunter" is sort of a concept album. A lot of the tracks have a tribal/jungle feel to them. I also feel like this is another reason why some Blondie fans don't care for it, but I find the sound/various themes very refreshing. "Little Caesar" is a strange little ditty, but I really have a soft spot for it because it's so unique and quirky. The next track, "Danceway" written by keyboardist Jimmy Destri (the songs he wrote for the band are genius) steps slightly away from the jungle theme. "Danceway" is by no means a "filler" track. Actually it's my favorite song because it's bouncy and makes you want to get up and well...dance! "Danceway" talks about the hustle and bustle of New York City life. The final three tracks are the most casual and melancholy starting with, "(Can I) Find the Right Words (To Say)" which is a beautiful ballad with a great synth. "English Boys" is sweetly serene, and contains some of Debbie's most introspective lyrics about how the world was changing during her formative years. I love the dark simplicity of the final track, "The Hunter Gets Captured By the Game" which is a cover written by Smokey Robinson (performed by The Marvelettes). I think Debbie's vocal delivery is quite effective on this track. It's very calm, and you can feel her pain/hurt seething below the surface. I adore the story, it's about a woman trying to play games with a man, and the woman ends up getting "played" by the man. This album has been digitally remastered. The sound quality is clean and bright. "The Hunter" isn't as flashy like "Autoamerican" or have much variety like "Eat to the Beat", but what this album does have is a heart and soul. This album is so personal and dark. I understand all the fuss and negative attention this album got over 30 years ago, but for me "The Hunter" is a thing of beauty (minus the hideous album cover). Enjoy!
