More local control 'would not lower academies' freedom'

The introduction of local "Directors of School Standards" would allow more schools to be built in areas where they are "desperately needed", former education secretary David Blunkett has said.

Speaking to the Today programme, Mr Blunkett explained that the UK is spending "very large sums of money" introducing schools where there is little need for extra places.

He added that his proposed changes would also allow academies to maintain their freedom.
