Mary Poppins and her magic umbrella will soon sail back onto screens.
Disney is developing a new live-action movie musical about the beloved character, Entertainment Weekly reports. Into the Woods director Rob Marshall and producers John DeLuca and Marc Platt will steer the project, which draws on as-yet unadapted stories from P.L. Travers’ children’s book series about Poppins. The last time the fabled nanny was in a movie was in 1964, when she was played by Julie Andrews.
Songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (who composed material for Hairspray and Smash) will write new songs and a score. The project has the support of Richard Sherman, who wrote some the 1964 film’s music with his late brother, as well as the Travers estate.
