Now receive Direct Messages from those who don’t follow you on Twitter

Twitter says they are introducing a new setting which will allow users to receive Direct Message from anyone, even if you are not following them.

Twitter, Twitter DM, Twitter’s Direct Message have undergone a big change.

Finally Direct Messages on Twitter are undergoing a big change. Earlier to send someone a direct message on the social media site, you both needed to follow each other and only then you could exchange messages.

Now Twitter says they are introducing a new setting which will allow users to receive Direct Message from anyone, even if you are not following them. Twitter has also introduced a new Direct Message button on profile pages on Android and iPhone, which shows profiles of people you can send Direct Messages to.

To allow anyone to send a Direct Message, you need to go to your Privacy and Security settings in your Twitter settings and then click on allow on ‘Receive direct messages from anyone’. You can also click an option to make sure people can’t add you to groups, thus avoiding Group Messages with people you might not be following and might not care for.

You should note that enabling ‘Receive Messages from anyone’ doesn’t mean you’ll be able to send message to everyone. If a user, who doesn’t follow you hasn’t enabled this setting, then you won’t able to send messages to them.

Unlike Facebook’s Other Messages inbox, where strangers message each other, the Twitter setting depends on whether the user activates it or not, which we should be thankful for, given how arguments tend to unfold on the social media site.

Festive offer

More recently, Twitter announced that it would crack down on abusive tweets and posts. Twitter will overhaul its safety policy and is beefing up the team responsible for enforcing it, along with investing “heavily” in ways to detect and limit the reach of abusive content, general counsel Vijaya Gadde said.

“We need to do a better job combating abuse without chilling or silencing speech,” Gadde said.

Changes included expanding the definition of banned “abuse” to include indirect threats of violence. “As some of our users have unfortunately experienced firsthand, certain types of abuse on our platform have gone unchecked because our policies and product have not appropriately recognised the scope and extent of harm inflicted by abusive behavior,” Gadde said. “Even when we have recognized that harassment is taking place, our response times have been inexcusably slow and the substance of our responses too meager. This is, to put it mildly, not good enough.”

The other big change that Twitter has introduced is a revamped its homepage to lure in logged-out users or those who haven’t signed up for the service. The new homepage will have real-time content categorised into topics around interest areas like politics, pop artists, etc. On clicking the topics, visitors will find a timeline of Tweets from popular accounts in that interest area. The new homepage will be available on desktops starting with US Twitter users first.
