  1. Post update

    James Ward

We are packing away the live text for the evening, folding it away next to Rufus the Hawk's hood and the Venus Rosewater Dish in the Centre Court safe.

It will be back out fresh, clean and sparkling with wit when Aimee Lewis gets hold of it at 10:00 BST tomorrow.

    See you there.

  2. Post update

    BBC Sport

But Wimbledon 2Day has not even started yet.

The best action and chat from the day is coming up in one punchy little package, presented by Claire Balding, and with expert punditry from Tim Henman and Martina Navratilova.

Tune into BBC Two or click on the live coverage tab on this very page.

  3. Post update

So who have we still out on court?

Berdych and Chardy? Yep. Delicately poised at one set all and 5-5 in the third.

Highly rated young American Madison Keys and Switzerland's Stefanie Voegele? Present. And Keys is in a spot of bother after losing the first set on a tie-break.

Jiri Vesley and Paolo Lorenzi? Still slogging with Vesely having taken the first two sets on tie-breaks. The winner plays James Ward next.

  5. Post update

    On James Ward's victory

    Jamie Baker

Former British Davis Cup player on BBC TV

"His composure and attitude to that match in the end was superb. He was too mentally tough for his opponent."

  6. Game, set and match

    Ward 6-7 6-2 6-4 3-6 Vanni

    Good news for a Brit

We have another day to slot in alongside Super Saturday in Britain's sporting week.

This is surely Tremendous Tuesday as James Ward joins Liam Broady, Andy Murray and Aljaz Bendene in the second round of the men's, on the same day that Heather Watson turfed out seeded Caroline Garcia to make the same stage of the women's draw.

  7. Get involved via #bbctennis

Sam Gosling: Well done Aljaz Bedene. Fantastic win by the British number 2. #BackTheBrits

Andrew Priestley: Great victory for Aljaz Bendene against the very experienced Radek Stepanek. Great to see so many Brits in the 2nd Round.

  8. Unprepared Eugenie

    Eugenie Bouchard

Eugenie Bouchard was knocked out in the first round at Wimbledon as one of the biggest stars of the grand slam 12 months ago became the first big-name casualty of this year's tournament.

Canadian Bouchard marched through to the 2014 final, where Petra Kvitova denied her the title, but lost 7-6 (7/3) 6-4 to China's Duan Ying-Ying on Court Three.

"I felt very unprepared for this match but I wanted to play no matter what. After Eastbourne we did testing and I've got a grade two tear in my abs.

"It was probably not smart to play here but I couldn't pass on Wimbledon. I'm going to take some time to heal and maybe not think about tennis for a little bit and then get back to it."

Chris Hood: In 30 minutes we could have FIVE Brits in the second round. Not sure if that's happened since players swapped trousers for shorts.

Chris, we have had a little look back already. In 2006 Britain actually had five players into the second round of the men's singles alone. Jamie Delgado, Richard Bloomfield, Martin Lee, Tim Henman and a young Andy Murray were the names for your pub quiz answer.

  12. Game, set and match

    Stepanek 5-7 6-1 6-4 3-6 4-6 Bedene

    Good news for a Brit

That is one way to ingratiate yourself with the Great British public.

Aljaz Bedene serves out in nerveless style, converting the second of three match points with an ace cleaved clean down the centre.

There is a crush of spectators wanting to grab a snap with him after he makes his way off court to rapturous applause.

    Aljaz Bedene
  13. Post update

    Stepanek 5-7 6-1 6-4 3-6 4-5 Bedene

    Good news for a Brit

    Hang on a jiffy!

Aljaz Bedene has only gone and broken Radek Stepanek's serve at the death of the fifth set.

He serves for the second round next...

  14. Post update

    Ward 6-7 6-2 6-4 2-3 Vanni

    Good news for a Brit

James Ward has broken serve in the fourth - suddenly he can sniff the second-round stable.

Italian opponent Luca Vanni is fading fast.

  15. Simple start for champion

    Petra Kvitova

Defending champion Petra Kvitova, who racked up a straight-sets win over Kiki Bertens, goes on to face Japan's Kurumi Nara or Magda Linette of Poland in round two.

"I was very nervous but when I was standing on the court, the people were clapping, the atmosphere was brilliant," said the 24-year-old.

"I am really glad how I played as well. Nerves are important, they are healthy. I like them. I was sick a few days ago but still played very well."

  16. Post update

    Berdych 6-2 6-7 3-2 Chardy

Tomas Berdych - whose name my internal monologue repeats in the style of Street Fighter 2's Chun-Li announcing her "flying bird kick" - has had a bit of bother out on Court One.

Jeremy Chardy has nabbed the second set and suddenly an early evening stroll has become less of a cakewalk.

  17. Post update

Nothing to report of any note from the early stages of the current sets in the matches involving British men.

Aljaz Bedene is level pegging at 2-2 in the fifth and deciding set against Radek Stepanek.

    Aljaz Bedene

James Ward is 2-1 down but serving, two sets to one up on Luca Vanni.

  19. Highlights

Been out all day? Back home after work or enjoying the sunshine? Well you have missed a lot so far on day two at Wimbledon with more still to come.

Here are some of the top stories:

Murray mania: Britain's Andy Murray begins his Wimbledon campaign with a win over Mikhail Kukushkin as the Centre Court temperature reaches 41C.

Mixed success for Brits: British number one Heather Watson beats Caroline Garcia in the first round at Wimbledon, but Laura Robson suffers defeat.

No problems: Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer ease through.

  21. Post update

    Wozniacki 7-5 6-0 Zheng

    Caroline Wozniacki

Caroline Wozniacki has whistled through the second set against Saisai Zheng in 37 minutes.

The fifth seed departs to leave Centre Court done for the day. There is already a man sweeping the baseline with a giant hoover contraption.

    Ward 6-7 6-2 6-4 Vanni

    Good news for a Brit

But might James Ward beat Aljaz Bedene to the punch?

The Londoner, ranked fourth nationally, has served out the third set against Luca Vanni.

    James Ward
  24. Game and fourth set

    Stepanek 5-7 6-1 6-4 3-6 Bedene

    Good news for a Brit

Aljaz Bedene has 11 years of youth on Radek Stepanek.

Is that going to be the deciding factor in a fifth set? That is where we are heading.

We have not had three British men into the second round since 2006. With Andy Murray and Liam Broady already there we are looking at a minor piece of history if Bedene can pull through.

  26. Broady handed early start

  27. Post update

    Stepanek 5-7 6-1 6-4 3-5 Bedene

    Good news for a Brit

And the tide is turning red, white and blue over on court eight as well.

Aljez Bendene, suddenly as British as a bank holiday on the M25 to us all, is serving for the fourth set against Radek Stepanek.

That is some decent gravel to get back into the match.

  28. Post update

    Ward 6-7 6-2 4-3 Vanni

    Chris Bevan

    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

"We've just had a brief Carry On moment here on court 12 - a lady who sounds a lot like Barbara Windsor loudly proclaimed "Ooooh James" as Ward dumped an attempted drop shot into the net.

"His opponent Luca Vanni still looks flakier than a 99 cone, though, and the Italian's inconsistency has helped Ward protect that early break he got in set three. Still, he has got more work to do to see this one out as the shadows lengthen across the court."

  29. Post update

    Ward 6-7 6-2 4-3 Vanni

    Good news for a Brit

James Ward does do pretty. When he wins it is likely to be a mucky dogfight of match.

That is the way it is heading on court 12.

The Londoner is a break up in the third set against Luca Vanni. A winnable second-round match against either Jiri Vesely or Paolo Lorenzi awaits if he can see off Vanni.

  30. Game, set and match

    Monfils 6-4 6-4 7-5 Carreno Busta

    Allez le Monf!

The most entertaining Frenchman since Marcel Marceau is into the second round as Gael Monfils polishes off Pablo Carreno Busta in straight sets.

He has never been beyond the third round at the All England.

    Stand by your beds.

The order of play for tomorrow has landed, carved in stone and in triplicate from the referee's office.

Here be the Centre Court chosen few...

  35. Game and third set

    Stepanek 5-7 6-1 6-4 Bedene

    Bad news for a Brit

Radek Stepanek is chipping away and is pretty close to sculpting a second-round spot out on court eight.

British number two Aljaz Bedene will need to win over five sets to make the next stage.

  36. Post update

    Sunbathing fans at Wimbledon

They will need the chewing gum scraper to clear out some of the desiccated spectator remains come closing time.

Still a rotisserie hot day out there.

  37. Post update

    Ward 6-7 6-2 0-1 Vanni

    Chris Bevan

    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

"Luca Vanni's lack of pedigree on grass - he had only played and lost two matches before Wimbledon qualifying, where he also lost - always looked encouraging for James Ward when the Italian replaced the injured David Ferrer as a lucky loser in round one.

"And so it proved in the second set, with Vanni peering suspiciously at the green surface after being left befuddled by a bounce. His serve deserted him too, and Ward took full advantage to level the match. He is enjoying himself in the evening sunshine, and so are the noisy crowd on court 12."

Ward has just broken at the start of the third set.

  38. Best friends

Much love between Dustin Brown and Lu Yen-hsun tonight.

German Brown beat the Taiwanese - who nicknames himself Rendy - 3-6 6-3 7-5 6-4 earlier.

  39. Game and second set

    Ward 6-7 6-2 Vanni

    Good news for a Brit

James Ward levels things up out on court 12 against Luca Vanni.

The shadows are lengthening. This match could do likewise. Both players look hunkered down for the long haul.

  40. Post update

    Berdych 6-2 1-1 Chardy

Sixth seed Tomas Berdych is poking his head up above the parapet for the first time in 2015.

The Czech, a runner-up in 2010, has taken the first set against French fancy Jeremy Chardy.

He is seeded to a quarter-final opponent for Roger Federer, and therefore semi-final opponent for Andy Murray.

Which would be interesting after Kim Sears less-than-delicate observations when they met at the Australian Open earlier this year.

  41. Heather is happy

  42. Get involved via #bbctennis

Matt McGladrigan: Ward just seems far too deep behind the baseline in the rally and on return. Step up, be aggressive.

  43. Post update

    Ward 6-7 4-1 Vanni

James Ward - you won't like him when he is angry.

And that is just what Luca Vanni has gone and done by winning the first set.

The British number four is a break up on the Italian and is swinging for the backboards on his ground strokes.

  44. And the biggest choker is...

    Borna Coric

Sergiy Stakhovsky seems to have taken his five-set defeat by 18-year-old Borna Coric in good spirit - declaring himself the winner of a Wimbledon award in the process.

Stakhovsky is the man who knocked out Roger Federer in 2013 - but today he came a cropper against the Croat, losing 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 2-6 6-1 7-9.

"And the prize choker of Wimbledon goes....to.... me," the Ukrainian tweeted.

  45. Game and first set

    Vanni 7-6 (7-4) Ward

    Chris Bevan

    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

"James Ward did not do too much wrong in that first set but a couple of stray forehands - one on set point - were all it took to give Luca Vanni the tie-break. "Keep believing" yells the British number four's biggest fan, and Ward does have previous for doing things the hard way.

"When he reached the second round here in 2012, he lost the first set of his first-round match but prevailed in five against Pablo Andujar. The crowd on court 12 would love a repeat of that comeback now."

  46. BBC coverage - plenty of options

    BBC Sport

    BBC

Just got home from work? Don't worry there is still plenty of live tennis to watch across BBC online and television this evening. You can visit our tennis section of the website here. You won't regret it.

  47. Wimbledon in bloom

    Wimbledon 2015

A picture doesn't always paint a true scene. Yes, the sky is the colour of the Caribbean sea. Yes, the grounds look like Kew Gardens.

But what you can't see is the man in the distance, flat on his back with a towel covering his face as he creates a makeshift shade from the sky's scorching orb. And it doesn't show you the man who has fallen asleep in the sun's full glare, soon to wake up with a burnt belly the colour of a lobster. Ouch.

  48. Light refreshment

How hot has it been in Wimbledon today? It's been the sort of weather which makes you want to squirt water into your eyes.

    Feliciano Lopez
  49. Game and second set

    Stepanek 5-7 6-1 Bedene

    Mike Henson

    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

"Radek Stepanek looks like a man who would have no trouble making difficult decisions about an ailing and much-loved family Labrador.

"Aljaz Bedene made a decent plea to prolong the second set, forcing three break points in its seventh and final game. But Stepanek was having none of it, shutting the younger man down with no mercy."

  50. Ten out of 10 for Murray

    Andy Murray

Ten years on since Andy Murray made his Wimbledon bow, Andy Murray has yet to lose a first-round match in this part of the world. We doff our cap to you, sir.

  51. Post update

    Vanni 5-5 Ward

    Chris Bevan

    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

    James Ward

"At the moment, only one spectator is vocally backing James Ward on court 12 but, from somewhere behind me, he is certainly making himself heard. "C'mon Wardyyyyy," he bellows again as his man wobbles on serve for the first time and slips to deuce. Fear not, because the British number four recovers to see out the game with a couple of stylish winners, bringing a repeat of what is now a familiar battle cry from his number one fan."

  52. Post update

    Stepanek 5-7 5-1 Bedene

    Mike Henson

    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

    Radek Stepanek

"The wheels are wobbling for Aljaz Bendene whose game deals in much finer margins than Radek Stepanek's.

"He ships a double break as the line-seeking groundies that were landing in the first set stray off target in the second.

"In the meantime, one of the ball boys on neighbouring court nine has to come off duty for a sit down, swig of water and a ice towel. He, and the rest of them, will have earned their barley water."

  53. Post update

    Eugenie Bouchard
  54. Post update

    John McEnroe

Three-time Wimbledon champion on BBC Two

"Andy Murray is in the best place I have seen for a long time. I anticipate great things for him in this tournament."

  55. I always think I can win - Watson

British number one Heather Watson on BBC Two after beating Caroline Garcia in the first round: "It was very tense for both us findng it tough to close it out.

"I knew even if we had started the third set yesterday, we wouldn't have finished it. I was finding it tough to see in the first set yesterday because of the sun but I had the momentum as we went into the third set.

"I felt we didn't have many long rallies. Her serve was very good, all the important points she was hitting very good first serves.

"The crowd helped me so, so much. I really enjoyed it, it makes the Wimbledon experience so much more for me. Because I am not seeded, matches like this I shouldn't win but I do believe I should be there and should be winning.

"I put pressure on myself. I always go on the court thinking I can win, I have to be more consistent in my results. It is more common now for the seeds to go out because of the depth.

  56. Post update

So, within 20-odd minutes, both Bouchard and Halep - who played each other in the semis a year ago - have gone. Halep is the first top three seed to go out in the first round of the ladies' singles here at Wimbledon since Martina Hingis 14 years ago.

  57. Match stats

    Murray 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 Kukushkin

    Andy Murray vs Mikhail Kukushkin
  58. Post update

    Murray 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 Kukushkin

    John McEnroe

Three-time Wimbledon champion on BBC Two

"Kukushkin was very difficult to deal with - he hits a hard, flat ball. Murray's serve went away and gave Kukushin belief.

"Murray, I'm sure, wants to be more aggressive, but got backed off the baseline. It's not the way he will win the tournament."

  59. Centre Court bonus

The three matches which were scheduled for Centre Court today have finished, which means there's time to squeeze another one in. The bonus match? The winsome Caroline Wozniacki against Saisai Zheng of China. The pair are currently warming-up so it won't be long until they start.

  60. Game, set and match

    Halep out

Shock on Court One, where third seed Simona Halep - a semi-finalist here a year ago - has been beaten 5-7 6-4 6-3 by Slovakia's Jana Cepelova.

  61. Post update

    Vanni 3-3 Ward

    Chris Bevan

    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

"A welcome breeze wafts through court 12 - well, welcome for everyone apart from the woman next to me who saw her straw boater fly off and into her husband's face. On court, James Ward has started well, dropping only two points in his first three service games and giving Luca Vanni plenty to think about with some brisk returns. They are still on serve at the moment though."

  62. Player reaction

    Murray 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 Kukushkin

    Andy Murray

Andy Murray on BBC One: "It was a tough match. I made it hard for myself at the end of the second set. He then started playing some very aggressive tennis. He was hitting it so low it was difficult to do anything.

"I am glad I got through, it was a hot day and he was a tough opponent. Towards the end of the second set I missed 10 or 11 first serves in a row and I gave him an opportunity.

"I was not surprised, I have seen some of his results when he has played on the big courts. There is definitely work to be done for but my opponent played very well and made it very difficult for me to play offensive. He made it very uncomfortable for me."

  63. Post update

    Justine Henin

Seven-time Grand Slam champion on BBC Radio 5 live

"Great match, very fun to watch. Perfect first match for Andy. Kukushkin tested him physically and mentally but Murray is into this tournament, a favourite for sure."

  64. Post update

    Russell Fuller

    BBC tennis correspondent at Wimbledon

"There was a second set wobble as Kukushkin forehand caught fire but a comfortable winner. This fabulous run continues, he's won 21 of his last 22 matches contested."

  65. Post update

    Murray 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 Kukushkin

    John McEnroe

Three-time Wimbledon champion on BBC Two

"Good enough. You saw some things that make you realise he could go all the way. Moments where you saw anyone on any given day could do something special. Did we ever truly doubt Murray would win? No. Everyone got what they wanted.

"Kukushkin got respect, Murray got tested, the crowd got entertained."

  66. Post update

    Murray

Standing ovation for Murray after two hours and 13 minutes of mainly cruise control. Room for improvement there, particularly on his second serve, but let those worries wait until practice on Wednesday. The Scot flings a few wristbands into the sea of arms in the stands, gathers his bags and squiggles an initial or two on the giant tennis balls proffered by his eager acolytes.

  67. Game, set and match

    Murray 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 Kukushkin

    Andy Murray

Shadows starting to stretch across towards the baseline by Kulu's toes, and the Kazakh fizzes a return onto Murray's own metatarsals for 15-30. No no - double fault from Murray, two break points. Kukushkin goes for broke, but that forehand buries itself in the net. Deep serve out wide, Kuku stretching, same result, deuce. "Come on!" mutters Murray. Big serve, return long, match point. Serve out wide, backhand return into the tramlines. Job done...

  68. Game and first set

    Stepanek 5-7 Bedene

    Mike Henson

    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

"A young man watching on court eight is sporting a bicep like Neapolitan ice cream - a third chestnut tan, a third humming pink with burn, a third pasty north European white.

"After aping Tim Henman's hair, I have an idea for Bedene's further Britification. Instead of the suspiciously French sounding "Bed-a-nay", why not switch the pronunciation of your name to "Bu-Deen" to rhyme with posh south coast private school Roedean?

"They usually charge thousands for "personal brand" advice like this..."

Murray a study in calm now after that strange second set wobble, and as Kulu dinks a half-hearted forehand into the net, he is now just a single game away from the second round. His opponent will come from the match currently on Court Seven between Robin Haase and Alejandro Falla - Haase currently two sets to one up, and with a break in the fourth.

  75. Robson positive but patient

    Rodina 6-4 6-4 Robson

Britain's Laura Robson says she will continue to bide her time on the way to regaining full fitness.

The former British number one, 21, only made her return last week from a 17-month lay-off with several injury problems.

"I've been patient for a year and a half so I'm not going to rush now. I've got a physio and a coach who wouldn't let me rush back anyway," said the Londoner, who lost on her return to Wimbledon.

"The positive from the last 17 months is that it has been good to see my family and friends, and have an almost normal life for the last year. But I'm glad to be back on tour."

Former British number one Laura Robson believes she is still capable of breaking into the top 25 of the world as she continues her comeback from long-term injury.

Robson, who has struggled with wrist and knee injuries, was knocked out of Wimbledon on her first Grand Slam appearance in 17 months.

"I'm confident that I have ability to get back to where I was - if not higher," said the one-time world number 27.

"It will still be a long process but I'm excited that I have another chance to do it. At the age of 21 I have some good years ahead."

Murray then allows his concentration to drift as a feeble backhand attempt at a lob is thrashed away for deuce, but an ace down the middle eases the danger.

Well, luckily the referee's office has quite a headliner on the bill.

When he was done receiving a standing ovation from the crowd and felicitations from Roger Federer among hundreds of others, and Australia's united acclaim; a first-round loser, yes, but far beyond that a statesman of the game."

Jacquelin Magnay, European correspondent, writing for The Australian, says: "In truth Hewitt, who has had a love-hate relationship with the public for his early brash and unsubtle manner, has been farewelled at Wimbledon with a depth of affection."

"The young Yorkshireman lost the first three points on his serve after that five-minute bit of treatment midway through the last set, but roared back for a marvellous hold.

"However, it must still be bothering him - the Ukrainian comfortably goes a double break up for 5-1 before cleaning up the second set in 28 minutes.

"Edmund disappeared off court, presumably for some more treatment, but has looked in decent shape so far in the third..."

"'I love you Grigor!' No, that's not me talking - that's the cry from the female fans assembled outside the practice courts as they plead for Maria Sharapova's other half to stop for autographs and selfies after his hitting session.

"To be fair to Dimitrov, last year's conqueror of Andy Murray and eventual semi-finalist, he obliges and even takes a few pics himself."

If the tennis thing ever dries up for Dimitrov, there will be a bidding war among the clothing catalogues to get him in their pages.

    Richard Krajicek

1996 Wimbledon champion on BBC Radio 5 live

    Edmund 6-7 1-6 Dolgopolov

    Jeff Tarango

Former professional tennis player on BBC Radio 5 live

Dolgopolov breaks Edmund again and in a blink of an eye the Ukrainian leads by two sets to love.

"It's very tough. He came in the underdog, it's a winnable match for him but at this point not being able to serve at full strength he has hill to climb, the odds of a win are going way up."

    Russell Fuller

"It was sad to see Nadal play poorly when he wasn't 100%. We have to accept and welcome when the stars are beaten by younger players, we don't want things to stay the same forever.

"Nadal is 29, he's won 14 Slams and I'm not convinced he'll win another, but he still has the potential to do so."

Over on Court One, Rafael Nadal is knocking up against Thomaz Bellucci.

The Spaniard is a two-time champion here, but he has been a walking first-week upset in recent years.

In addition to defeat to world number 114 Nick Kyrios last year, he was defeated by 135-ranked Steve Darcis in 2013 and world number 100 Lukas Rosol in 2012.

Thomaz Bellucci, the useful 42-ranked Brazilian, will fancy his chances of a first win afgter four defeats in their previous meetings.

  245. Kvitova on court

    Petra Kvitova

Women's champion Petra Kvitova is out on Centre Court.

It really is blazing out there. The sort of day to bleach everything in sight to Wimbledon white and sepia.

While Kvitova went all the way to lift the Venus Rosewater Dish last year, her opponent today - Dutch world number 108 Kiki Bertens - lost in the first round to Japan's Eri Hozumi.

Bertens has dropped from world number 68 at the start of the year to her current ranking and lost in the quarter-final of a lower-tier clay event in her last event before arriving in SW19.

    Chris Bevan

    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

    Andy Murray

"Andy Murray is out on the practice courts ahead of his first-round match against world number 58 Mikhail Kukushkin later on Tuesday and, not surprisingly, he is taking things a bit easier than his session on Monday.

"In between gulps of water, he is practicing his service returns with his coach Jonas Bjorkman and let's just say the Swede is not exactly testing him. 'You really don't have to tell me where you are going to put them,' says Murray, as he fires them back with interest and into the corners of the court."

"Disappointment for Edmund. He has played a lot of matches this year. So he is used to dealing with this. But the difficulty is he has lost some momentum with the stomach injury. This is the one that he wants to win and show that he can do some damage."

"He still is a very young man. He has 10 years in the top 100. That is more than a respectable career."

  252. Post update

    Seppi 2-2 Klein

As Kyle Edmund slogs on against a higher-ranked opponent and niggly injury, we also have another Brit in action.

Brydan Klein, an import to the British system from Australia, has taken to court 18. Based on the rankings, he faces the toughest task of any of the six British men in the first round, taking on world number 27 Andreas Seppi, who is 150 places north of him in the standings.

Klein, who lost in the first round of the Nottingham Open coming into this, is keeping it on serve so far.

  253. Edmund in trouble

    Jonathan Jurejko

    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

    Kyle Edmund

"For those who wouldn't recognise British number three Kyle Edmund if he barged past you in the street, he is a fair-skinned young man with bright blond hair (all natural I think).

"So he must be baking out here in the lunchtime sun. There is not a cloud in the south London sky as the rays burn down on to court three.

"And that's not his only problem. Edmund has the trainer on - appears he's got some sort of problem with right shoulder."

  256. 'Tennis champions have responsibility'

Here's a bit more of what Pete Sampras had to say to his 16-year-old self:

"There's more to being a pro than just playing tennis. The more successful you are, the more people will want out of you. It won't always be something you'll want to do, and it won't always be fun.

"The pressure will be as exhausting as anything you'll ever do on the tennis court. But as a tennis champion, you have that responsibility. You play tennis because you love the game, not because you love the limelight, so get ready.

"Think about getting some media training. It'll go a long way. Luckily, you'll be out of the game before these things called Twitter and Facebook come around. Be thankful for that. One day you'll understand what I mean."

  257. Pistol Pete's fabulous letter

    Pete Sampras

Pete Sampras was a fine grass court player and, it turns out, the seven-time Wimbledon champion is a fine writer too. The American has written a letter to his 16-year-old self which is engaging to the very end. Basically, it's worth a read.

"Dear 16-year-old Pete," he starts. "You're about to go pro, and you're pretty excited. Deep in your heart you know you're eventually going to succeed. But believe me, it's coming a lot sooner than you think."

  258. Champagne popping

    Jonathan Jurejko

    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

"As if the on-court action is not exciting enough, there is a cheery moment in the seats next to the press box when one female spectator pops her champagne cork rather too loudly at the changeover. 259. Edmund loses first set

Kyle Edmund 6-7 (4-7) Alexandr Dolgopolov

  264. *Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 4-5 Gilles Muller

    Peter Fleming

Seven-time Grand Slam doubles winner on BBC Red Button

    Tsonga

"Outside of the top four, Tsonga is possibly the strongest of the bunch. He has a chance of winning a Grand Slam, it's a long shot though because unfortunately he's playing in the strongest era of tennis history. To win a major you have to generally beat two of the big four."

  265. Edmund 4-4 Dolgopolov

    Jonathan Jurejko

    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

    Kyle Edmund

"Rather disappointingly there is only one visible show of British support for Kyle Edmund on a busy court three - that's a lone Union flag which one lady unfurls after every winning game for the Yorkshireman.

"No blue, white and red vests, sunhats or shorts unfortunately. That's not to say there isn't plenty of vocal support though.

"A chant of 'Let's go Ed-mund, let's go!' won't be far away if he creates a crucial lead in this opening set."

  266. The weatherman says...

    Spectators apply suncream

BBC weatherman Simon King tells us he's been rushed off his feet this morning, which isn't a surprise. A bit of sunshine and we can't talk about anything else.

"Hot and very sunny at Wimbledon with barely a cloud in sight today and a maximum temperature getting to around 30°C," says Mr King. "It'll be even hotter on Wednesday with a high of around 32 or 33 degrees Celsius. However, there'll be slightly more cloud around which will bring a more humid and uncomfortable feel to things."

  267. And the winner is...

    Serena Williams

Drum roll, please. Earlier we asked who you thought would win the Wimbledon women's singles title and an overwhelming majority of you picked Serena Williams.

It's unsurprising 64% of you think the 33-year-old is going to triumph a week on Saturday. Top seed, world number one, two Grand Slams in the bag already in 2015. Formidable.

  268. Edmund 3-2 Dolgopolov

    Jonathan Jurejko

    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

"Wow - there are more breaks here than at a primary school. Kyle Edmund hits straight back, wiping out Alexandr Dolgopolov's advantage at the first attempt, then mopping up his own serve with a fourth ace of the map.

"Sweltering spectators use the changeover as an opportunity to slap on some more sunscreen. Those not coping as well in the midday heat are scarpering for the shade."

  269. Edmund 3-2 Dolgopolov*

    Philip Studd

    BBC Radio 5 live commentator

Alexsandr Dolgopolov double faults to gift Brit Kyle Edmund a break back.

"That's what you get with Dolgopolov - a lot of free points. Two double faults in that game and there's a game gift wrapped for Kyle Edmund."

  271. Post update

    Jonathan Jurejko

    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

"The best way to start your opening match at Wimbledon? A 114mph ace. Then, in the serve after next, spank down a 120mph effort. Unfortunately for British number three Kyle Edmund, it still doesn't transfer into an easy hold against Alexandr Dolgopolov.

"Edmund saves break point at deuce before forcing the Ukrainian into a couple of errors to take the game. Relief for the already sweat-drenched crowd on court three."

  272. Centre Court filling up

Spectators gradually filtering into Centre Court, making sure they know where their seats are. Very wise. One gentleman has deemed Wimbledon to be the kind of place he should wear denim knee-length army-style shorts.

    Jeff Tarango

Former professional tennis player on BBC Radio 5 live

British number two Kyle Edmund is on court against Alexandr Dolgopolov. The Brit won his first round match at the French Open beating Stephane Robert but then withdrew from the second round with an abdominal problem.

Tarango said: "He is pulling his arm down a little bit on his serve, which says he's maybe not comfortable with the injury, but it's just the warm-up."

  274. Court One order of play

    Court One order of play

Other courts are available, of course. On Court One one of the greats, Rafael Nadal, starts his campaign against Thomaz Bellucci. Will we see the tigerish Spaniard of old, or the one who has struggled in this part of the world in recent years?

  279. Great laundry day

    Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has, presumably, been drying his Wimbledon whites in preparation for his first-round match against Gilles Muller. "Ready for action," he tweets. The Frenchman is fortunate it's the sort of day eggs can be fried on pavements otherwise there'd be a laundry debacle in the Tsonga household.

"With temperatures set to scorch to almost 30C later, the early birds already inside Wimbledon are taking the opportunity to sit in the shade and stock up the water levels near the Food Village.

"A pastry pantry is dishing out the breakfast to hungry punters, while an outlet flogging Mexican food is surprisingly busy at this relatively earlier hour.

"Only spotted one or two with a glass of bubbly in their grasp..."

  281. The people who make Wimbledon tick

How many plants and shrubs are dotted around the All England Club? Go on, have a guess. Anyway, I'll let Katie Wright, who is chatting to the people behind the scenes who make Wimbledon tick, tell you.

"What Martyn Falconer, the head gardener, doesn't know about Wimbledon's vast garden isn't worth knowing," says Katie. "This is his 15th year tending to the glorious floral displays that typify the All England Club. It's no mean feat - he helps care for 50,000 plants and shrubs which are laid across 42 acres of grounds.

Martyn and his five-strong team work all year round to prepare the gardens but extra help is drafted in during the tournament to ensure everything looks as good on day 14 as it did on the opening day.

It's not just the tennis crowds who are benefitting from Martyn's hard work this year. An area by the Aorangi Pavilion has proved particularly tricky over the years to maintain and this time around Martyn has planted some native wild flowers which are nectar rich and are proving a real bee favourite.

"It gets pretty lively at some parts of the day, hopefully Andy Murray won't walk past and get bitten on the backside."

    Head gardener

And the hardest part of his job? "You see people using plant pots as ashtrays. Yesterday I saw a row of people sitting on the wall and squashing the geraniums - I was thinking 'should I say something?' But thought 'I better not'. Although I know I'll have to work harder to make it look good for the next day!" Wimbledon goers, you've been warned…

  282. Who will win?

    Wimbledon vote

We're all about interaction this morning. Oh, yes. Today's vote is a straightforward one: who will win the women's singles title? Plenty to choose from so make your choice and we'll reveal the winner later today. This is just for fun, obviously. (Yes, I did describe it as fun.)

  283. Where will you be watching? #murraymania

Andy Murray was watching the opening day at home with his dog - but where and how will you be watching Andy Murray? Will there be face paint? Will there be fancy dress? I'm assuming there'll be plenty of whooping and hollering.

Tweet us pictures of yourselves preparing for the big match using the hashtag #murraymania. You can also send us videos too, if you want. Thanks in advance.

  284. Rusty watching Rusty

    Andy Murray with his dog

Cue an excuse to post a picture of a cute dog... British number one Andy Murray was watching Lleyton Hewitt's final match at SW19 with his dog Rusty yesterday.

"Me and rusty watching rusty," posted Murray on Instagram.

For those of you who don't know, former champion Hewitt lost 3-6 6-3 4-6 6-0 11-9 to Jarkko Nieminen in a thrilling match which brought the curtain down on his Wimbledon playing days.

  285. Part of the queue

    Wimbledon

"You know when you see three or four people ahead of you at the supermarket till? Frustrating, isn't it? Well imagine being here - at the end of the Wimbledon queue.

"The steward with the job of holding the purple flag - which marks the back of the pile - says there are about 9,600 people patiently waiting in the line.

"But, according to him, those only just arriving in the past hour might not stroll through the famous green gates until...18:00 BST!"

  286. Centre Court's final preparations

    Centre Court being prepared

Groundstaff have been carrying out some final preparations on Centre Court this morning. There was a man with a sponge, sucking up moisture; there was a man with a lawn mower, trimming the turf ever so slightly; there was a man adding a splash of fresh paint onto the markings. I just thought you might like to know.

  287. What the papers say

    Daily Telegraph

What's on the back page of the Daily Telegraph? It's Britain's Liam Broady. Naturally. "Dream debut," says the paper, describing his victory as a "thriller".

  288. Hot, hot, hot

    Carol Kirkwood weather forecaster

Anyone and everyone will tell you it's a warm day in Wimbledon, but what's the official forecast? Here's what BBC Weather have tweeted: "Sunshine at Wimbledon today and hotter than yesterday (29/30°C poss). Wednesday will be challenging 32/33°C & humid."

(I've included a picture of Carol because it was taken by my assistant editor this morning. He assures me he wasn't stalking Carol.)

  289. Waiting and waiting and waiting

    Wimbledon tweet about the queue

Three hours ago. Yes, THREE HOURS ago, Wimbledon tweeted to say the queue was at capacity, telling fans they were likely to have to wait "many hours". That's dedication to the tennis cause. Hopefully everyone will be in before Andy Murray gets his campaign started later this afternoon.

  290. Capacity crowd

    queue

It's a familiar sight: thousands of people gathered in Wimbledon Park, forming snaking lines and patiently waiting for hours to get through the All England Club's gates.

"This is the most that's ever been," said a local resident as I walked by her this morning. That's an unofficial statement, of course. Many are already in the ground, but there are plenty still queuing.

  291. The gates are open!

    Wimbledon 2015

As is routine at this time of the morning, a voice from above tells us the gates are open and the public are allowed to enter. There's a warning, though: "Please do not run," he requests, politely. His plea is heeded. Sort of. People imitating John Cleese in the Ministry of Silly walks as they make their way into the ground.

  292. What the papers say

    Daily Express

"Broady boy is in blue heaven," is the Daily Express' headline. The paper says the Briton faces a fine for turning the air blue during his match. Words which cannot be repeated on this page, of course.

  293. Win will not heal rift - Broady

    Liam Broady

But British number six Liam Broady has said he does not expect his Wimbledon victory to heal a rift with his father.

He fell out with his father Simon in 2012, when he chose to work with the Lawn Tennis Association.

Asked whether the result might help bring the family back together, he said: "I doubt it. To be honest, my dad's not even popped into my head with the result."

  294. What the papers say

    Liam Broady

"Broady smile: young Briton wins on his debut," writes the Independent.

"Even if he loses in the next round he is likely to climb to a career-high position around No 160 after Wimbledon," says the Paul Newman in the paper.

  295. Brilliant Broady

    Liam Broady

But before we look ahead at what's in store today, we should reflect on what happened on the opening day. Specifically, Liam Broady's magnificent five-set victory.

    The bearded 21-year-old, a wildcard, beat Australia's Marinko Matosevic 5-7 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-3.

For those of you who don't know, he was ranked 44 places below his opponent at 182nd, but enjoyed the best win of his career to claim his first victory in a Grand Slam main draw.

  296. Murray in action

Hello! Welcome to Wimbledon Live and thanks for joining us. It's a beautiful day in south-west London. Azure skies and flowers in full bloom - a picture-perfect setting as Britain's number one Andy Murray starts his bid to reclaim the Wimbledon title he won in 2013.
