Huawei MediaPad M1 is an affordable slate that can take your calls

I'm Andrew Hoyle for CNET, and I'm here taking a look at the Huawei MediaPad M1. Now, the M1 is an 8-inch slate, which immediately makes it more comfortable than most of the 10-inch slates. You definitely will not struggle to hold this in one hand. And if you push hard enough, you will probably get it in to a jacket pocket as well. Now, its size does mean that it's going up against Apple's iPad Mini. Now, with the resolution of 1280x920 pixels, it's not competing in display terms, but Huawei does tell me that it will be quite a bit cheaper. Now, the display is quite bright, though, and it had good viewing angles, as well. Now, physically, it's not bad-looking, either. You can see it's got a mostly metal design, and on the front, you've got dual front-facing speakers which just make it look rather reminiscent of the HTC One. Now, you could buy a sim card inside, which not only gives you 4G data, but also let you make calls or send texts. So, theoretically, you could use it as a phone if you don't mind looking ridiculous holding such a big thing up to your face. Under the hood is a 1.6 gigaHertz quad core processor, and it comes running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. That's not the most recent version of Android, but with Huawei's Emotion User Interface on top, you probably won't notice much difference. There was no official word from Huawei on pricing yet, but it is expected to sit somewhere around the £200 mark when it goes on sale in the UK in May. Huawei hasn't said yet whether it will be available outside of the UK or in the US. But make sure to keep it at CNET for all the latest news.
