Police have confirmed they are investigating complaints about racist and homophobic Facebook comments which were allegedly posted by a former UKIP councillor.

Dave Small, who was elected to Redditch Borough Council on 23 May, has been suspended by the party.

West Mercia Police said it is investigating a complaint about alleged racist comments posted on the website.

Mr Small has admitted to being homophobic but denies being racist.

It is alleged Mr Small called African migrants "scroungers" and Clare Balding and Sir Elton John "perverts" because of their sexualities.

Supt Kevin Purcell said: "I can confirm an investigation is currently ongoing and we will be making no further comment at this stage."

A spokesman for UKIP said Mr Small had been expelled for bringing the party into disrepute.
