EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros seems determined to turn Jada Pinkett Smith into a nightclub-owning magnate. She already is the linchpin of Warner Bros TV’s DC Comics origin series Gotham, playing the imposing, hotheaded and notoriously sadistic gangster boss and nightclub owner Fish Mooney. The series starring Ben McKenzie and Donal Logue premieres September 28 on Fox. Now I hear Pinkett Smith is in talks to join the cast of Magic Mike XXL, next year’s sequel to the hit 2012 movie based on star Channing Tatum’s early days in the male-stripper game. She will play the owner of a strip club, a role that originally was to be played by a guy. Warner Bros is releasing this one July 1.
The original movie was financed by director Steven Soderbergh and Tatum, who starred with Matthew McConaughey, Alex Pettyfer, Matt Bomer and made $113.7M at the domestic box office — one of Soderbergh’s most lucrative movies ever — and since has spawned a Broadway musical now in the works.
Pinkett Smith, repped by Paradigm and attorney Jason Sloane, is also executive producing The Queen Latifah Show.
