This is the third collection in this series of early Dionne Warwick LPs. Each volume (there are 4 in the series) is comprised of 4 LPs on 2 CDs; some with bonus tracks. This particular volume, however, has so much bonus material that the 4 LPs are spread across 3 CDs! These appear to be British imports with a booklet that has plenty of background of each LP and the various songs.

If your interest is in Ms. Warwick as Bacharach's chanteuse, then chances are that you already have what you want in her numerous greatest hits albums. But, if you have any interest in the wealth of additional material, then you can't beat these buys. You not only have fine renditions of songs by other songwriters and writing teams, but some rare Bacharach/David songs. Three that readily come to mind is a particularly fine "Where Is Love?" from Lionel Bart's OLIVER, Jimmy Webb's "Up, Up, And Away", and a rarely heard Bacharach/David "Who Is Gonna Love Me?"

As to the quality of the recordings, overall, they are excellent but there is the odd drop-out or they inserted a mono version over that of the stereo. Perhaps the mono version was in better shape. The thing is that I know for some of these tracks, there is better source material out there...I've heard it in some of the greatest hits albums. Also, I found the tempos in some of the songs to be a tad slower that I remember; "Promises, Promises" comes to mind. Perhaps the speed of the master has been corrected and we are finally hearing the songs at their proper tempo. Another plus is the clarity of the accompaniment. I know I am hearing details that I have never heard before.

This is a fantastic buy for those that appreciate Ms. Warwick's vocal style and, in many cases, the definitive versions of those classic Bacharach/David Songs.

Ce triple CD regroupe 4 albums sortis entre 1967 et 1969, « The windows of the world » de 1967 (#22 US), « In the valley of the dolls » de 1968 (#6 US), « Promises, promises » (#18 US) et « Soulful » (#11 US) en 1969. Tous ses albums ont été peu appréciés en GB.
CD1 - Il débute par l'album « The windows of the world » (2,5/5) qui commence par le super hit « I say a little prayer » (#4 US), un des nombreux morceaux composés sur mesure par le duo Burt Bacharach / Hal David. Pour les trois morceaux suivants ils exploitent alternativement la douceur et la puissance de la voix de Dionne. Viens ensuite la douceur seule pour le succès « The windows of the world » (#32 US) avant la reprise du classique « (There's) always something there to remind me » sans connaitre le succès de Sandie Shaw (#1 UK). Sa version de « Somewhere » extrait du film « West side story » n'est pas très harmonieuse (moins bien que celle de P.J. Proby en GB). Les morceaux suivants sont également moyens. Le deuxième album de ce CD1, « In the valley of the dolls » (4/5), est beaucoup plus agréable car Dionne maitrise mieux la puissance de sa voix pour devenir plus harmonieuse. Il débute bien avec « As long a there's an apple tree » et les bonnes reprises de « Up, up and away » des 5th Dimension (#7 US) ou de « You're my world » sans connaitre le succès de Cilla Black (#26 US et #1 UK). Viens ensuite le hit « Valley of the dolls » (#2 US et #28 UK) suivi de l'excellente « Silent voices » précédant l'autre hit « Do you know the way to San Jose » (#10 US et #8 UK). Autres réussites avec les quatre derniers morceaux.
CD2 - Il commence par 3 bonus, « Taking a chance » typiquement américain suivi de deux morceaux en italien dont une merveilleuse ballade « La voce del silenzie » avant de reprendre l'album « Promises, promises » (4/5) qui débute avec le succès de même nom (#19 US) suivi d'agréables ballades qui prouvent la maturité acquise par Dionne comme sur « This girl's in love with you » (#7 US), « Little green apples », « Where is love ? » et « Who is gonna love me ? » (#33 US) avec toujours des orchestrations adéquates. Encore de la douceur ponctuée de passages plus énergiques avec « Whoever you are, I love you », le sensible « Where am I going ? », l'excellent « Wanting things », l'accrocheur « Lonely in my heart » et le mélancolique « Yesterday I heard the rain ». Des bonus de qualité avec le prenant « Dream sweet dreamer » suivi du hit « The april fools » (#37 US), le très bon « Slaves », le hit « Odds and ends » (#43 US), la magnifique ballade soul « Our ages or our heart » et pour finir avec l'entrainant « If you let me make love to you ».
CD3 - Il commence par l'album « Soulful » (5/5) où Dionne reprend avec raffinement de nombreux classiques comme « You've lost that lovin' feeling » (#1 US par the Righteous Brothers #1 US), « I'm your puppet » (#6 US par James & Bobby Purify), « People got to be free » (# 1 US par The Rascals), « You're all I need to get by » (#7 US par Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell), « We can work it out » et « A hard days night » des Beatles, « I've been loving you too long » d'Othis Redding, « People get ready » (#14 par The Impressions mais dont la reprise par The Walker Brothers est fantastique) et enfin « Hey Jude » des Beatles. Au milieu de ces succès on a droit à un slow remarquable « Do right woman-do right man ». Cet album est complété par 13 bonus qui sont pour la plupart de bonnes reprises de succès connus « The weight », « Loving you sweeter than ever » (Stevie Wonder), « Someday we'll be together » (#1 US par The Supremes), « Everyday people » et « Stand » (Sly & Family Stone), « Games people play » (Joe South) et « McArthur Park » (# 2 de Richard Harris dont The Fours Tops ont fait également une excellente reprise).
Plus on écoute ces CD, plus on les apprécie. A acquérir sans hésitation.

Tercer volumen reuniendo los cuatro LP's que D. Warwick grabó entre 1967 y 1969, presentados en una edición de lujo y muy bien documentada por el sello Edsel en tres CD's. Muchos temas escritos y producidos por el dúo Bacharach/David, más 15 temas complementarios que no se editaron en LP, configuran una edición impecable. En el tercer disco de esta edición se recoge el LP "SOULFUL", que Dionne grabó en los American Studios de Memphis con el productor Chips Moman y un elenco de músicos de estudio que son de lo mejor que se ha reunido jamás en un estudio de grabación. El sonido creado por Moman no ha envejecido un ápice y suena potente y sofisticado a la vez. De Warwick, cualquier comentario es gratuito; está excelente en casi todo y muy bien en el resto.

This triple CD follows two earlier double CDs Presenting Dionne Warwick / Anyone Who Had A Heart / Make Way / The Sensitive Sound and Here I Am & Live In Paris & Here Where There Is Love & On Stage And In Movies This triple CD follows two earlier double CDs Presenting Dionne Warwick / Anyone Who Had A Heart / Make Way / The Sensitive Sound and Here I Am & Live In Paris & Here Where There Is Love & On Stage And In Movies in presenting re-issues of Dionne's sixties music. This volume features the ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth albums of Dionne's career. The first three of these continue much as before with Bacharach and David still in control. Classic songs featured include I say a little prayer, Always something there to remind me, Up, up and away, You're my world, Valley of the dolls, Do you know the way to San Jose and Little green apples, just to name a few.

Her performance of L.O.V.E. is strange. She uses a different voice for much of the song and it doesn't work for me. It would have worked better in her normal voice. I've heard men sing this song superbly. I don't remember hearing a female version before, but this is an aberration. On a shorter album, I might knock a star off for this track, but with over 60 great tracks here, that would be unfair.

The final CD is all about her self-produced album, Soulful, and its bonus tracks. Here, she was able to decide not only what songs to sing, but also how they would be arranged. The result is music that sounds more like we would expect from a soul singer than her earlier work. Many of the songs are covers of songs associated with other soul singers, such as Do right woman - do right man (Aretha Franklin), I've been loving you too long to stop now (Otis Redding), Someday we'll be together (Diana Ross and Supremes) and To be young gifted and black (Nina Simone) but there are also three Beatles covers (done in a soulful style) and there is the second oddity of this compilation, MacArthur Park.

MacArthur Park has been severely cut to under two and a half minutes, omitting the piece about someone leaving the cake out in the rain, and much else besides, but the bit that Dionne chose to record, she did superbly. Whether Dionne set out to record it this way, or whether she cut it during production after initially recording a longer version, I don't know, but that's how it ended up.

This is certainly an interesting part of Dionne's career, with plenty of great music and a couple of oddities.

I loved the extended "soulful" cuts and wish she had done more of this type of music. Her "Hurts So Bad" is outstanding. She's a terrific singer of course but some of the material was weak to begin with and others have not dated well.
