A "violent" criminal who escaped from prison could have fled to Spain, according to reports.

Haroon Ahmed, 26, from Derby, has been on the run since leaving HMP Dovegate, in Staffordshire, on Wednesday.

Staffordshire Police said it could not confirm or deny he had left the UK, after the Sunday Mirror claimed to have tracked Ahmed down in Marbella, external.

The force said it was "actively investigating all lines of inquiry" in the search for the prisoner.

Ahmed, who police said is Asian, 6ft tall with a thin build and short black hair, been serving a sentence for a robbery he committed in 2008.

People have been warned not to approach him by police due to his "violent history".

His brother, Majeed Ahmed, 25, of Clarence Road in Derby, has been charged with assisting a prisoner in escaping from prison.
