With their pledge to donate shares worth $45 billion, Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive of Facebook, and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have sent the world of philanthropy into a flurry of expectations.

The couple described broad goals for the money, which will be managed by a new organization, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. “Our initial areas of focus will be personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities,” they wrote.
