It’s true that when the Samsung Galaxy J3 ⑥ hit the Chinese market, we raised one if not both eyebrows at its unusual name (the 6 inside a circle was literally a part of the smartphone’s handle). The budget device meant to compete with HUAWEI and Xiaomi handsets came in metallic-looking plastic, but it boasted some pretty robust specs for its price range.

Now the artist formally known as ⑥ is coming to the US market, dropping the more unusual part of its name and showcasing as simply the Samsung Galaxy J3. The device launched today on Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile, and is also available from a few independent wireless retailers. This smartphone rocks a 5-inch Super AMOLED display and a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor. It’s battery is 2,600 mAh, and its internal storage is 16 gigs. Cameras are decent, with the main one sporting 5 megapixels and the front facing one offering 2 MP.

This handset primarily targets entry level users, which is why it features an “Easy Mode” that makes navigating it easier. The interface becomes simpler, and the font and icons become larger. In short, if you’re recommending a first smartphone for grandma, this is actually a pretty good pick. You can grab this device for the low, low price of just $179.99.
