14 third-party Apple Watch apps we like (pictures)

As Apple Watch becomes available, you need to know what apps are your worth your while. CNET's Scott Stein has several suggestions.

Scott Stein
I started with CNET reviewing laptops in 2009. Now I explore wearable tech, VR/AR, tablets, gaming and future/emerging trends in our changing world. Other obsessions include magic, immersive theater, puzzles, board games, cooking, improv and the New York Jets. My background includes an MFA in theater which I apply to thinking about immersive experiences of the future.

Twitter

Twitter's the perfect type of bite-size stuff for a tiny Apple Watch screen. You can browse recent tweets, fave and retweet and even reply by voice dictation...if you dare.

Read our post about Apple Watch apps.

Starbucks

The best part of this app is you can use a QR code to pay with your account from your watch. You can also add your Starbucks card to Passbook, separately, and skip the app.

1Password

Upgrade to the premium version of 1Password and you can keep your stored account passwords on your watch for easy access. Don’t worry: if you take your watch off, it’s password protected.

Citibank

If you’re a Citibank customer, the one-glance Citibank app is pretty good: it gives a snapshot of your accounts, recent transactions, and you can have the Apple Watch ping you when credit card activity happens.

MLB At Bat

Simple and effective: the free MLB app is good enough to push updated scores and basic stat info to follow the games of your choice. Innings, at-bats and how many people are on base -- just enough to follow along.

TV Guide

The TV Guide app shows trending TV shows today, in case you want to know what everyone else is likely to be watching. (TV Guide is owned by CBS, which owns CNET, but I also love this app.)

Evernote

Scan notes from your account, and you can even add new ones by voice dictation; it’s the memo pad the Apple Watch lacks.

NYTimes

Quick headlines and summaries for selected daily stories. Continually updated, and you can bookmark stories to read later. Needs a subscription.

TheConverted

Look at currencies, measurements and whatever else you want converted: it brings up little scales to eyeball-compare yen and dollars, or Fahrenheit and Celsius and so on.

TheScore

For sports scores beyond baseball, The Score does a decent job of showing upcoming games and scores for teams you’re interested in, with some basic in-the-moment stats.

Yelp

Pretty easy-to-use neighborhood scanning of restaurants and businesses, including reviews and ratings. It’s easy to use.

TripAdvisor

Similar to Yelp, but a nice alternative. You might prefer its layout to Yelp, or find it brings up slightly different suggestions.

Elevate

Of the many weird and not-that-fun games for the Apple Watch, Elevate elevates itself by being a quick series of test-your-wits timed quizzes, a little extra companion for the train-your-brain iPhone app.

Pandora

It’s a separate radio remote control for your iPhone, playing, skipping, favoriting tracks and browsing your stations. It works pretty well, and launches reliably.
