West Indies v England: Stuart Broad praises Joe Root's example

England captain Stuart Broad has called on his players to follow Joe Root's example in the limited-overs series against West Indies.

Root hit 104 not out on Tuesday as England warmed up for Friday's first of three one-day internationals, their first since the dismal Ashes tour.

"It was something we lacked: players taking on responsibility," said Broad.

"There was a lot of 'You didn't do that and you didn't do that' - well Rooty grabbed the bat and got a hundred."

Broad, leading the ODI side in the absence of the rested Alastair Cook, added: "We will be looking for more of that from all the players in the next six weeks."

Of Root's ton in the 29-run win over University of West Indies Vice Chancellor's XI, Broad said: "Rooty is a fantastic player. He's had a tough winter - all the players out there had a tough winter.

"It was nice to play different opposition and get ourselves ready for what's going to be a tough test against the West Indies.

"On a slightly tough wicket to get 290 was encouraging. It was by no means the perfect batting performance but in one-day cricket if someone gets a hundred you are going to post a good score.

"And Rooty took that responsibility on."

Broad, England's Twenty20 captain, will also lead the side in three T20s against the Windies which will serve as a warm-up for the World T20 in Bangladesh.

After a winter that has seen England whitewashed in their Ashes defence and also lose seven of the eight limited-overs games against Australia, the Nottinghamshire all-rounder recognises the need for improvement.

"The talk is all about improving to help England win games over the next six weeks," said Broad.

"When you see people that desperate to do well and have that desire to play for England you should see improvements pretty quickly."

Vice-captain Eoin Morgan missed practice on Thursday with a sore knee after hurting himself fielding on Tuesday, but the left-handed batsman is "confident" he will be fit.

With England's ODI squad selected with the World T20 in mind, Nottinghamshire opener Alex Hales, an international regular in the shortest form, looks set to make his ODI debut.
