An elderly, disabled man is in a critical condition after being beaten in his County Armagh home by a gang of men.

The attack happened at Clogharevan Park, Bessbrook, at about 02:40 BST on Monday.

Police said the three men broke into a house and went into the bedroom where the elderly man was in bed.

They hit the man, who is in his 70s, with a sharp implement and he was cut several times.

Police believe a sum of money was stolen.

The man was taken to Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry before being transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

Gerard Hughes of the Bessbrook Community Association, who is a neighbour of the man, said he was disgusted at the attack.

"It is horrendous and the rest of the community are sickened by this too," he added.

Police have appealed to anyone who noticed anything suspicious around the time of the attack to contact them.
